“Thank you for all these, the clothing, the blankets, the winter clothes for the children. Also, I want to thank you for the sewing kit. Now I can sew anything I need myself.”

Shoumaya Abas is a 42 year old refugee from Homs, Syria. These past few months Shoumaya is living at the site for refugees and migrants in Eleonas with her husband and her 11 year old child. Her family of seven is separated. Four of her children currently live in Sweden, while Shoumaya is in Greece waiting for the moment to meet them. During the distribution of winter items by UNHCR and its partners in Eleonas, Shoumaya received UNIQLO clothing.

In cooperation with UNHCR, the fashion company UNIQLO donated 77,000 pieces of winter clothes for refugees in Greece. More than 35,000 were distributed by the end of October to refugees and migrants in the mainland and the islands. Further distribution of winter clothes donated by UNIQLO is currently ongoing in 15 accommodation sites across Greece.

Winter items distribution is part of the humanitarian response effort to the harsh winter weather conditions and one of the four pillars on which UNHCR’s work to make official refugee sites fit for winter is based.

The remaining three are:
• Replacement of tents with prefab houses on 8 sites.
• Transfer of people staying in sites not suitable for the winter to hotels at special rates and temporary apartments.
• Upgrading and maintenance of the infrastructure on 15 sites.
