UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, continuedin mid-February with the roll-out of its existing cash assistance programme in Northern Greece. UNHCR distributed 500 cash cards to cover 1,200 people staying in apartments and hotels in Greece’s Central Macedonia region.
The cash-card assistance programme is being rolled out throughout Greece, as humanitarian aid to support refugee individuals and families to meet their most basic needs, including complementary food, communication, hygiene products, transportation, clothing and education material for the children. The programme aims to promote greater self-reliance, re-establish dignity and provide choice while allowing refugees to meet their household’s basic needs.
The decision to proceed with this type of humanitarian assistance in Greece has been jointly made by UNHCR, the Greek Ministry of Migration Policy and the European Commission (EC). Funds for this programme are entirely covered by the European Commission – Humanitarian Aid.
